Day 6: Fallon to Austin, Nevada
This was the day dreaded by all. Just the thought of going 112 miles in the July heat of the Nevada high desert made me lose sleep. It lived up to my expectations but not for the reasons I invented. It started as a "high gear" day. Fast by my standards for the first 60 miles and fairly cool, but then the weather took a strange turn. We were expecting the usual 90-100F temperatures, but instead it was cloudy and then rain. Although the lower temperatures were welcome the rain in this part of Nevada is weird. It made for some strange riding.
There are no towns between Fallon and Austin but there are a couple of nice stores. These are both descendants of the "Pony Express" days of the 1860's. Perfectly located for people on horseback or bicycles. The one in Middlegate, about 60 miles from Fallon, has what may be the best hamburger in the USA. I would leave it up to everyone to determine for themselves.
Austin is a small town but we managed to find some very good beer and pizza a short walk from the hotel. Tomorrows start time depends on when everyone wakes up. Need time to recover from today. It all appears downhill from here, but I know this is not true.
